apache56: You need to check the history of this a bit closer - South Ossetia is a part of Georgia that is largely composed of ethnic Russians and first tried to break away from Georgia in the early 90"s. South Ossetia has harassed neighboring towns in Georgia around their so called "break away" community with artillery fire and raids from time to time. During the Olympics they fired artillery into Georgia and Georgia responded. Georgia got "sucked in" by the Russians who were waiting for this to happen so they could gain control of South Ossetia and another region within Georgia. Since Georgia was applying to become part of NATO, the Russians were unhappy, also Georgia controls a critical oil pipeline - here's that oil thing again! The real sneaky bastards are the Russians led by former KGB official Putin.
hektic31: Well i have to agree with you on the fact that the Russians waited for this chance most joyfully and Putin got to use the strong arm tactics he is so fond from his Soviet era days, their are to many conflicting stories from both sides to know who fired first, their are even stories that south ossetia never fired anything and it was actuall Russian Artillery that fired{a report from the georgian pres himself} we will never know who started what. And i totally agree Russia other motives for invading beyond peacekeeping. Georgia's biggest mistake of all was invading though after they had promised the world they would not use military force to bring their breakaway regions under control, part of the reason they are future members of NATO and not members. Plain fact of the matter Saakishvelli acted rashly because he thought he was invincable to Russian might because of his ties with us, not very politicly savvy. When have we ever overtly stood up to russia in their own back yard? Putin is in my opinion the most dangerous man in the world, and he made it no secret he had it out for Saakishvelli before he tried to jion NATO.
